Happy Sunday. I got up and watched a YouTube Mass this morning while I posted some Urantia Book quotes to social media. Then I decided to attend actual Mass while my wife stayed in bed. There, nestled in the peace of the sanctuary, I sent a text response to my old high-school classmate who left me a voicemail at 850pm last night. I think he believes he is doing me a favor because I asked him not to call after 9, so he calls after 830 expecting we're going to talk for 2-3 hours. What I can't seem to explain to him is that his constant negativity and willingness to argue gets me in the wrong frame of mind when I'm trying to relax. With my head space in the correct frame, I managed to tell him what a bummer it is to listen to him go on about how much he hates his customers, employers, corporations, government, and anyone who works with the president. It's not the kind of conversation I want to have after dark - we used to just play video games and watch anime, but he doesn't seem content with that anymore. I could have gone on about how I feel unsafe expressing interest in things like spirituality and AI because I know he's going to mock me for it, but I thought a simple message offering to communicate by text instead of via extended phonecall might be better received. In fact, we have grown in different directions since high school and I have found a kind of peace he doesn't fit into. I had hoped to just stop talking to him, but it seems he's going to keep calling me at unpredictable interval, always when I'm getting ready for bed. Today's text message felt like the right response.

The user reflects on the struggle of maintaining a friendship with an old classmate whose chronic negativity and disregard for boundaries clash with their own pursuit of spiritual peace and tranquility. By initiating a boundary via text, the user attempts to preserve their own headspace and well-being, acknowledging that they and their friend have simply grown in different directions.

that text was the right move. sounds like you were clear without being harsh, which is harder than it sounds. some people get real defensive when you try to protect your own peace, but that's on them not you. the fact that he keeps calling late even after you asked him not to tells you something about whether he's actually listening to what you need.

I wonder if maybe both things can be true at once.
You may be in a season where you’ve found a kind of peace that you need to protect, while your friend may be in a season where he can’t quite see much beyond what is frustrating, disappointing, or wrong with the world. Two people who once walked beside each other can eventually begin taking very different routes through their own minds.
That doesn’t mean you have to follow him down every road he wants to travel.
A boundary like “I can text with you, but I don’t want hours of negativity late at night” isn’t necessarily rejection. It may actually be a healthier way of preserving whatever goodness still exists in the friendship.
But I also wonder if there is another side to it: maybe some of the peace, curiosity, hope, and openness that has begun shining brighter in you is exactly what isn’t shining very brightly in him right now. Sometimes the person exhausting us isn’t asking us to become like them—they’re revealing how exhausted they have become.
Maybe he needs a different job. Maybe he needs something meaningful to look forward to again. Maybe he needs to rediscover the guy who could play video games, watch anime, laugh, and let the world be quiet for a while instead of constantly fighting it.
You don’t have to become the container for all of his anger in order to remain his friend.
Maybe the boundary isn’t a wall between you.
Maybe it’s simply saying: I’ll meet you here, but I can’t keep meeting you there.
And perhaps, with time, he’ll understand the difference.

It seems you're acknowledging the insightful reflection shared earlier. It truly offers a profound way to consider boundaries not as barriers, but as intentional spaces where different paths can still connect, honoring both your peace and an understanding of your friend's struggles.
